The Hope Crosses Any Terrain team made a touching visit to the South African Red Cross Nursery School in Vereeniging, recently. Along with donating thousands of essential items, staff from Land Rover South Africa were given an opportunity to help make a difference in the lives of young children.
A collection drive was hosted by the Land Rover head office and 31 participating dealerships across South Africa. With donations from staff and members of the public, a total of 14 326 essential items were collected, ranging from blankets and clothes, to food, toiletries and toys.
These goods were stored in Land Rover’s Hope Boxes – powered by the Land Rover Discovery Sport. On 12 October the valuable shipment made its way to the South African Red Cross head office in Parkmore, Johannesburg, from where it will be distributed to the organisation’s network of nurseries, orphanages and old-age homes.
“We’ve worked with the Red Cross to change lives since 1956, so the passion for this initiative was visible on all levels, in all our dealerships and staff,” said Richard Gouverneur, Managing Director, Jaguar Land Rover South Africa and sub-Sahara Africa. “We also wanted to get hands-on, which is why we visited one of the Red Cross nursery schools. It was a valuable, humbling experience for everybody involved, and we were all grateful for the opportunity to make difference.”
Staff members from Land Rover South Africa went above and beyond on their visit to the Red Cross Nursery School in Vereeniging, which is home to 88 young children under the age of six. An entire a day was set aside to bring joy and change their lives in a meaningful way.
Playtime was upgraded, thanks to the installation of a new jungle gym, and 100 soccer balls were donated to ensure smiles all around. Popcorn and ice cream stations were set up to create a festive, playful atmosphere, while Land Rover staff members went about upgrading classrooms with a fresh lick of paint and new educational items.
Additionally, each little one also received a Hope Crosses Any Terrain backpack containing essential educational items, a water bottle, treats and refreshments.
“The South African Red Cross Society deeply acknowledges the support and partnership from Land Rover South Africa in advancing the humanitarian work the Red Cross does for the vulnerable communities in South Africa,” said Derick Naidoo, CEO of the South African Red Cross Society. “The Red Cross needs more support from other partners like Land Rover South Africa in aiding humanity.”
Land Rover’s long-standing relationship with the Red Cross in South Africa has seen a number of collaborations. In 2015 assistance was provided to rural communities by providing access to HIV and tuberculosis treatments – an initiative that improved the quality of life for 50 612 people.
Through Hope Crosses Any Terrain and initiatives like the Land Rover Hope Boxes, Jaguar Land Rover South Africa will contribute to their worldwide goal of changing 12-million lives by 2020.
