With one hand on our heart and the other holding a pair of braai tongs, Land Rover AFRICA has secured its seat on the National Braai Tour 2016 along with braai legend and fireside icon, Jan Braai. Here’s what it’s about…
Heritage. It’s a word that’s close to the heart of every South African.
We can imagine no better way to celebrate our diverse and unique culture than by chucking a few chops on the braai grid and road-tripping through some of the most glorious locations along the fabled Garden Route.
From 10-17 September, in the lead-up to South Africa’s Heritage Day – we will join the National Braai Tour 2016. Led by the South African ‘King of the Coals’, Jan Braai, the convoy of 40 vehicles (four members per team) will embark on one epic road trip that’ll take them from Cape Town, along the magnificent Garden Route to Addo Elephant National Park near Port Elizabeth.
After a day of driving and witnessing some of South Africa’s most breathtaking heritage sites, the National Braai Tour will see 160 proud and passionate braaiers from across the country unite around the ‘Atmosfire’ (big campfire) every evening.
Here, fellow braaiers can share stories of our wonderfully diverse heritage and wave the South African flag while the aroma of steak and traditional boerewors lingers in the air. With breakfast, lunch and dinner coming off the coals, Braai Tour participants will walk away with a new understanding and mastery of this proudly South African culinary art.
Pieter van Vuuren, National Braai Tour coordinator and brand ambassador, explains that participants of the tour will visit interesting and significant historic sites as well as learn more about the heritage of the greatest country in the world.
“During the following eight days, 40 teams of four will be winding their way across the country, overnighting and camping in SANParks National Reserves as they go along. They will be covering more than 2 000km, eating steak every day and sharing every glorious moment on social media,” he says.
Land Rover AFRICA magazine will team up with the colourful characters at the investment company, Easy Equities (a product of The Purple Group Limited) to complete the road trip and learn more about South African heritage.
Kurt Solomon, head of brand support at Purple Group, says that the National Braai Tour 2016 is a good fit for Easy Equities. “We like doing stuff where we can add value, have fun and make a difference.”
“We believe South Africans are amazing and want to showcase that even more. Both Easy Equities and the National Braai Tour are passionate SA brands that believes in taking what we do seriously, but not ourselves!” Kurt looks forward to meeting new people, seeing new, beautiful parts of South Africa and sharing new braai ideas.
According to Easy Equities, “Investing is easy. Your turn!” Cheap as chips and easy as pie, now you can take that first (or next) step in your investing journey! Big scary words, not welcome. Tricky tech, non-existent. VIP tickets, we don’t got ‘em. EasyEquities is an online platform which allows the regular Joe, Jabu or Jane to buy shares in the brands and companies they love. Our Tour Wheels
Our tour wheels, a brand-new Land Rover Discovery Sport, was kindly provided by Jaguar Land Rover Cape Town. Duane Wright, dealer marketing manager at Jaguar Land Rover Cape Town, says Land Rover, as a brand, has a very proud heritage. “We at Land Rover Cape Town are always excited to be part of an adventure.”
The Jan Braai National Tour fits in perfectly with Jaguar Land Rover’s objectives. “Not only is this an exciting adventure, but it also celebrates one of South Africa’s oldest traditions – braaiing. It is more than just cooking food, it’s a central point of unity and tradition for South Africans,” he says.
Talking about our tour wheels, Duane says that the Discovery Sport’s sleek, aerodynamic silhouette, with legendary Land Rover capability and flexible interior, will provide a luxurious and smooth drive. “It will accommodate the crew and their kit with ease. It’s our most versatile and compact SUV and has been designed and engineered to meet any challenge.”
Thanks to Venter Trailers, another well-known and uniquely South African brand, we’ll have a special Savuti off-road trailer at our disposal. This quality-constructed off-road trailer is designed for the outdoor enthusiast with more than enough space for luggage, camping gear and braai utensils and wood. This efficient and cost-effective and provides the right balance between maximising space utilisation and compact size.
The National Braai Tour 2016 is not a competition, race or survival course, but an event to celebrate our
country and our unique heritage. Jan Braai and his team provide the braai grids, wood, firelighters, utensils, and all the ingredients for two braai meals per day.
With the sun and wind in our face, Land Rover AFRICA will hop into the Discovery Sport to join Jan Braai on his quest to find cultural unison through the art of braai and mouth- watering open-fire recipes. Apart from Jan Braai’s usual entourage of television and media crew, including his massive social media following, we will keep you all up to date with how the trip develops through our own social media.
